In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major explosions rocking Tehran, following claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were heard in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet stated, though it did not initially provide further details.
Context: Escalating Tensions and Prior Events
The incident occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the region. Key events leading up to this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of American warships in the region, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the United States and Iran on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of further talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
These developments is fluid, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
