Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these drugs must be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
